I'm someone who has to factor in recovery time after every social thing I do in order not to burn out, so effectively January is a hibernation month after the madness of December and I accept that about myself. Still I did take a few shots along the way, visiting venue with a lovely 2025 couple, celebrating Foxs 6th birthday and meeting up with family to see the planes at Cosford RAF Museum.

Christmas '24 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2025/1/christmas-24
It has been an effort to drag myself back to my desk this year, so excuse the delay. I'm a huge planner, so new year is usually my time to shine, but this year I'm following the seasons, taking things at my own pace. Our little Bridgnorth Christmas was cosy and slow, with lots of crafts and pottering about at home in our little cottage.

Challis Family Christmas https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/12/challis-family-christmas
Since our last family portrait session in the summer this beautiful family has grown by 1 and I was invited to meet their littlest at home when she was barely 2 weeks old to get all of the snaps of all of her sweet newborn littleness that they grow out of before you know it. Naturally we also took plenty of photos of her siblings, parents and gorgeous dog Thea, too.

Pink Poppy Veils & Accessories https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/12/pink-poppy-veils-accessories

An On-Location studio session working again with the fabulous Pink Poppy Veils & Accessories featuring gowns from the equally gorgeous Emstrey Bridal. For this shoot we were working with a team as well as a model and so instead of working from my home studio, Vonny rented a space at Admaston House that was just spot on for the session, with gorgeous windows which let us work with some dynamic lighting throughout the day and added more versitility and mood for the images of each veil and dress.

November '24 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/12/november-24

This time last year I started to feel like I wasn't creating enough. There was work, and that was great, but I had stopped making things for myself, which meant I'd stopped exploring and experimenting and having my own definition of what made a 'good' picture. So I challenged myself to start carrying my camera more, to take it out to non-events and find subjects in the things I find around me. With limited time and limited transport in the week, most of these images are of the same places, but walking the same paths and studying the same spaces has taught me to see them in new ways, in new seasons, and see how they change over time.

AwaikenU Session 2 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/11/awaikenu-session-2 For my second studio session for Bridgnorth brand AwaikenU, we covered the same approach as before including lifestyle product photography, 'cut out' white shots, detail shots and some styled studio images on a blue backdrop. Having a mixture of different styles for each product is great for adding visual variety to product listings on sites like Amazon as well as providing consistent and varied content for social media.

Billie Rose Candles https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/11/billie-rose-candles
I'm so excited to share these images from my first session shooting for Billie Rose, who produce beautifully scented, long lasting luxury candles. Along with the products, I received a product description which rather than describing the props or lighting to be paired with a particular fragrance, described the inspiration behind the selected scents, and what they are evoking through our olfactory sense, which was such a creative and incredibly helpful way to provide me with insight into what the brand had in mind when making each candle, leaving me to interpret that visually, while maintaining the existing colour pallet and simplistic elegance of the brand. Every once in a while a business comes along and elevates my definition of a dream client and Billie Rose Candles have stepped it up another notch.

The Darbyshires https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/11/the-darbyshires
Chris and Maria were married in St Mary's Church in Alveley followed by a reception at The Royal Oak surrounded by family, friends and their two gorgeous daughters. A few days before the wedding, I was able to attend the church ceremony rehearsal, meet some of the wedding party and get a feel for the space, which in the case of church weddings is so, so valuable when lighting and layout can vary so much. On their Big Day, The Darbyshire’s were blessed with the most ideal weather (which for August is a big ask, with it typically being either too hot or too wet) and it really was a pleasure to have couple who were completely comfortable in front of the camera and happy to follow me into any great light I happened to spot. Here are some of my favourite shots from the day.

October '24 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/11/october-24
Much like Anne Shirley Cuthbert, 'I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers' and this October wasn't holding back. With a highly visible Aurora, a Hunter's Moon, rainbows and starry skies, autumnal walks to catch the leaves turning AND a murmuration of pigeons, Mother Nature has been on full form in Bridgnorth and I really got to reap the rewards of taking my camera out and about with me to be able to photograph the things I usually kick myself for missing. Sometimes viewing the world through y camera phone can feel like I’m missing out on the experience, but there’s something about shooting on my DSLR, knowing a moment has to be truly special for me to want to get it out and set it up, and at the end of a month having a collection of things that made me pause and appreciate what I witnessed, is such a special gift.

Marianne Rosen Brand Portraits https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/10/marianne-rosen-brand-portraits
I've had the pleasure of working with Marianne a few times over the years, this time combining backdrops from her home as well as recreating scenes around Ludlow for an updated branding portrait shoot. It's always such a privilege to collaborate with people time and again, to see their businesses evolve and Marianne in particular with her insight as razor sharp as her cheekbones is just as inspiring to be in the company of as she is to photograph.

This session was designed to generate content to support her work as an author and instructor, and I can highly recommend signing up to her newsletter for journaling inspiration and general reflections on how to live a more mindful, introspective life.

September 2024 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/10/september-2024

September is always a busy one in our house, between getting to grips with a new school year, keeping up with work and my eldest’s birthday, it’s felt none stop, but in a nice way. Luckily we also managed to squeeze in a trip to the woods at Wenlock Edge (mainly to visit the lime kilns because Chris is a nerd for lime), and I even had a couple of visits from a sweet neighbour cat who likes to eyeball the pigeons from the roof of our shed. I love this time of year.

are a vitamun/suppliment brand based in Shropshire who needed a full set of e-commerce and creatively styled product images to launch their brand new products this summer. As the brand is still growing and subject to change over time we decided to keep the styling simplistic and clean, echoing the brand packaging colours as well as looking to industry norms and Amazon image requirements to build an image set that provides a strong base to build from.

Summer Recap https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/9/summer-recap June to September has been busy in an overwhelming sort of way, with 2 primary school aged kids participating in every event they can and having said kids at home for the summer holidays while working throughout, I haven’t reached for my camera for much more than work this summer. Instead we've filled our days with little wanderings around Bridgnorth, attending local events and spending time with friends. We survived (barely), and I’m excited for the weather turning colder, excited to watch the seasons change and get back outside safe in the knowledge that I won’t melt.

ChocTilly https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/5/choctilly

I recently had the pleasure of working with Choctilly and fabulous local chocolatier offering gorgeus goodies and chocolate making workshops from their stores in the Maws Craft Centre and Much Wenlock High Street, to create some promo shots for their brand new Shropshire Collection, featuring  flavours from some wonderful Shropshire brands.

As we were working on a specicific collection, I wanted to keep the images consistent with the existing photos on the brand's site, with the emphasis on the gorgeous, glossy colours of the bonbons because they are so pretty.

April Recap https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/5/april-recap

March was dominated by March Meet The Maker Challenge (visit IG if you’d like to catch up with it) and I didn’t want to confuse myself by sharing a monthly blog along with it, but I’m so glad to see an upswing in visitors here because sadly Instagram just doesn’t feel like a space for sharing much more than portfolio work these days. So rather than jump through hoops trying to please the algorithm, I’m going to put my focus back to a space that’s just mine: Ye Olde Blog. Yes, it’s old school, but so am I and you’re here, aren’t you?

Last month we took advantage of the slowly improving weather and went on a few adventures around Shropshire. The Bluebell Wood is our go-to spot for our family portraits, and visiting some of the popular spots that make Bridgnorth so popular with tourists is one of my favourite ways to remind myself what a beautiful town we live in.

Back in February Lottie very kindly stepped up to model for a side project of mine. She did such a brilliant job I thought I’d share some of the headshots that we took in the moments in between singing and dancing and being given facts about Taylor Swift. I threw in a couple with Rory because pictures of ‘gal pals making each other laugh’ is possibly my favourite genre.

January was a whirlwind of birthdays, getting back into the swing of things after Christmas and craving the return of the sun. There has been a big influx of wedding enquiries this month so huge congratulations to all of you who got engaged over the holidays!

Prep for next month:

Spring is just on the horizon and Feb is the time to get ready for Mother's Day, Easter, and spring seasonal marketing. This is also an ideal time to start thinking about brand portrait sessions, particularly you're based in Shropshire and you'd like to book an outdoor session and want to make the most of the warmer weather longer days.

George & Vicky https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/1/george-vicky

Being asked to photograph the weddings of my business clients is easily one of the greatest privileges of my job because we already have experience working together and so that initial 20 minutes of getting used to me taking their photo isn’t a thing. George, who I am lucky to be able to work with regularly for his fantastic business Shropshire Macarons married his beautiful wife Vicky at the Hundred House Hotel in November which provided the perfect autumnal backdrop for their Harry Potter themed wedding. During all our chats in the run up to their big day Vicky was working tirelessly on their wedding decorations and we both got to share ideas about all the fun ways we could add a little something special to their photos. It was a wonderful collaboration from start to finish and I’m so, so happy with the way the photos turned out.

So buckle in, this was a full day (10 hour) shoot from prep to dancing, get yourself a cuppa, it’s going to be a goodie.

December Recap https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2024/1/december-recap

In December, I committed to allowing myself to go slowly. It’s not easy, especially when there’s always a voice in the back of my mind telling me that slowing down is wasting time, but I have to remind myself that time will pass no matter what, and I can spend that time filling each of my days to the brim or I can appreciate each one as it comes, so when family life gets busy, and my children are depending on me to ferry them between choir performances and Christmas parties and I have to remember the endless flow of Christmas jumper days, dress, raffle prize donations and a hundred other things, it's not fair to them, my clients or myself to try to spin all plates at once.

So we spent a lot of time at home, going on walks about this gorgeous countryside we live in and just taking photos for myself which was lovely. One of our personal December highlights was the annual Bridgnorth tractor run which passes by our kitchen window in a parade of festive, rural jolliness that always marks the beginning of Christmas.

After such a great break I'm ready to get back to my work with a fresh perspective and can't wait to see what product and brand photography work we can create together for all of your small businesses.

Upcoming prep for next month:

For my recurring clients or those of you who plan to be, check your calendar, and budget for the quarter and have a think about the most cost-effective way to use your photography funds. That could be saving it all for a catalogue shoot to cover a whole bunch of new products and designs when they’re ready, or a day long location shoot to cover various types of content for a website relaunch, or it could mean splitting it up into multiple smaller sessions that will give you a steady stream of fresh seasonal content throughout the year. Now is a great time to slide into my DMs to chat about plans you have for the upcoming months (Valentines Day being a biggie!) so we can make your next session cover as much ground as possible.

Greaves Family Portraits https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/9/greaves-family-portraits

A laid back, back garden, family portrait session for my pal and her relatives. The weather was glorious for us, and I spent an hour snapping the kids as they showed off their kid skills and mixed in a few posed shots with the grown-ups. I don't often shoot portraits, so it's especially fun when I do, they always have this commercial quality to them and with kids they pretty much always come out looking like they've been photographed for a magazine because they just don't hold back the same way we learn to as adults and that always produces gorgeous results.

Organics By Hannah 4 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/8/organics-by-hannah-4 I'm so excited to share the latest shoot for Organics By Hannah. This marks my 4th time working for the Birmingham based handmade hair and skincare brand and one of the best things about being able to work repeatedly with the same client is that it gives me the opportunity to go into each new session already fluent in their branding and the ways they use their images, using the feedback from every previous session to elevate their content further with the launch of every new product.

It means that when I'm buying new props and backdrops for my own collection I can make purchases with regular, repeat clients in mind (like this gorgeous spearmint tile I'd spotted and immediately knew it would be perfect for my next session). It also means when I'm coming up with ideas for techniques I'd like to use, I'm can plan them with particular brands in mind, and when designing a shoot I know precisely how to cater it to ensure the brand will get the most bang for their buck. It dramatically reduces the turnaround time because the client knows they are welcome to send over ideas they like and thoughts they've had in between booked sessions, so I already know going in what I want to produce and how to most efficiently make it happen.

I absolutely loved this shoot, and am already so hyped for the next one.

Liz & Graham https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/8/liz-graham

Liz & Graham were married in Neenton church just a stone’s throw from their home before heading back to the Pheasant at Neenton to celebrate. It was a gorgeous ceremony with easily the most spectacular hymn singing I've ever heard, with individual performances from some their incredibly talented guests. The entire day was a feast of small, well planned details, from the delicate embroidery of Liz's dress being mirrored in the decoration of the wedding cake, to the immaculately curated playlist of music playing throughout the stunning three course meal, this intimate, personal wedding was exactly what a wedding should be, a pure celebration of two people, what makes them who they are, surrounded by people who love them.

Pink Poppy 5 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/7/pink-poppy-5 For my latest shoot for Pink Poppy Veils & Accessories we added to the established image style of the veils against a grey backdrop in various crops, grey being a great choice for veils as it allows the fine white tulle to stand in releif against the background. Along with this I also added in some macro shots for beading options as well as some edge details against a soft pink in order to tie in with the overall brand.

Pembrokeshire https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/7/pembrokeshire When I was a student I lived at street away from the beach and while I love living in Shropshire, if there's one thing I miss the most it's the sea.
Both of my kids love it too in their own individual ways, my daughter loves to be swallowed up by the waves, to feel them crash around and have the sand pull her down as the tide rushes around her ankles. My son loves to use it for target practise, throwing stones as far as the strength of his arms can carry them or exploring tide pools for treasure. This month we were able to take them to Pembrokeshire, our first time there, but certainly it won't be our last.

Ellie & Tom https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/6/ellie-tom

A glorious rural summer wedding for the wedding of Ellie & Tom who finally tied the knot after Lockdown got in the way a few times between their original date and the final one, and even though Covid certainly has a lot to answer for, the delay it caused meant that they were able to have an incredibly special guest present at the wedding, their beautiful daughter!

It was my first time shooting a wedding at The Astbury in Claverley, with the ceremony taking place underneath the clear blue sky before portraits beside the lake and among the wildflower garden and then into a covered tent for the reception, we were absolutely spoiled for choice for the newlywed portraits. A truly gorgeous day.

Heide's Pottery https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/5/heides-poittery

For my shoot with Heide's Pottery I had a specific brief to work to with, shooting the subject with a sharp, even focus with a light falloff on the backdrop in a style often used in art galleries and museums. Fortunastely Heide was able to stay for the shoot and make sure her sculpture was lit in the way she'd invisioned and highlighting the particular aspects she wanted to shine. This can take a little trial and error sometimes, different materals, colours and textures behave diffeently under different lights and so it can take some maneuvering to get things right, but ultimately getting it right is absolutely essential to me.

The Sea https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/5/the-sea

Last weekend we traded in the lush greens of Shropshire for the cool blues of the Welsh seaside, just for the day, in exchange for some Parma Violet Ice Cream and a few hours throwing stones into the water.

Balanced Health with Homeopathy https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/5/balanced-health-with-homeopathy

Balanced Health With Homeopathy offers both in-person consultancy services and online sessions with the lovely Anne-Marie, who invited me to her home in Ditton Priors to shoot some personal branding images for her website and social media.

Portrait shoots are almost always a daunting concept for the person being photographed, and so often become something people put off doing, but believe me, they are never as awkward as people worry they will be. There is so much value in a quality set of images of you, your workspace and your process, not only for the benefit of your clients, customers and social media following but also for you to be able to give your business the polish that it deserves and I always strive to make your photoshoot as relaxed as possible.

These sessions can either take place in your home / workspace, which is most useful for makers or practitioners where having some ‘behind the scenes’ is beneficial. For everyone else I like to choose a location and head out for a walk, this could be a coffee shop or a public garden, and if you choose to visit Bridgnorth we can throw in a set of formal headshots with my home studio just a short walk from the high street.

Emma & Pat https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/5/emma-pat

Emma & Pat were married in April, it was a particularly special day not just because Pat is my brother-in-law and has brought someone as so genuinely wonderful as Emma into our family but because it ended up being my very first two-part wedding. The first half too place at The Bridal Barns in Claverly, celebrating with family and friends in a beautifully designed venue surrounded by woodland and wildlife, while the second half took place on the following day at Emma’s grand father’s care home as he was unfortunately unable to attend the first.

Organics By Hannah 3 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/4/organics-by-hannah-3 Organics By Hannah 3 Low Res (7)Organics By Hannah 3 Low Res (7) Beauty, hair ands skincare photography is always a fun challenge because we need to represent one sense (in this case tactile and scent) visually which isn't always as straightforward as it can be for things like food photography where the subject often looks very delicious all by itself. When selling exclusively online, imagery needs to be aspirational, needs to create a mood and establish a trust in the quality of your product that makes a customer want to buy what you're selling without ever having had first-hand experience of it, it's tricky.

Organics by Hannah is a Birmingham based brand with a very committed customer base (and with good reason), and after investing a lot of time into a rebrand of their product packaging our latest shoot was all about brand elevation and creating a versatile set of images that can be used in a variety of different ways over multiple platforms. As a remote, mini session we covered 3 set-ups including hero shots and groups for up to 5 products.

If you'd like to discuss remote product photography options for your own brand, get in touch, I'd love to hear from you!

Shropshire Macarons 7 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/4/shropshire-macarons-7 Shoots for Shropshire Macarons always need to combine a nod to their darker, luxury aesthetic and George's creative and fun personality which shines through in all of his flavours and passion for every little mac he creates. For this shoot we were updating their promo imagery, with a 'how it's made' photoshoot of a batch of two tone macarons and their making process. Promotional portraits don't and shouldn't only cover the 'who' behind the business, but also the where, why and how, so that when creating social media and marketing content that informs your audience and customer base about your brand (Shropshire Macarons offer Macaron making masterclass where how-to images are really useful), you have plenty of original, on-brand, illustrative pictures to go along with it.

Aston Eyre Barns - The Forge https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/3/aston-eyre-barns---the-forge Apologies for the radio silence around these parts this month, I've been busy over on Instagram and Facebook keeping up with the March Meet The Maker social media challenge and didn't want to confuse things between there and here so hang tight for April if you're interested to know what I've been working on this Month.

For the final Aston Eyre Barns property we're visiting The Forge, a sweet little cottage with a light, cosy, homey vibe and a free-standing bath on an indoor balcony. And did I mention all of these properties have their own hot tub? because they absolutely do!

Aston Eyre Barns - The Byre https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2023/1/astone-eyre-barns---the-byre

Aston Eyre Barns are a newly establishes trio of holiday rental's converted from a large barn just outside of Bridgnorth, in the lovely little village of Aston Eyre. Surrounded by farmland and beautiful traditional buildings, the properties interiors are an absolute wonderland and a result of Deb's impeccable artistic abilities (with many pieces given the Annie Sloan treatment)  and unparalleled taste in interiors, which after years of running Bridgnorth High Street's famous Tea & Roses and gifting us all with her stunning window display it was a real pleasure to meet the lady behind the window and see what she can do with more space to play.

With the barn being divided into 3 individual properties that can be rented separately but which also interconnect via internal doors, each cottage has its own distinct aesthetic which still manages to flow into and complement its neighbour. So I plan to share images of each cottage separately, as this was such a mammoth session and with so much thought and attention given to each, it only seems right to let them each have their own feature.

Not being local to Shropshire, these sessions take place entirely remotely, with the items being delivered to me along with a shotlist and moodboard that we put together in the run up to the session.
Remote photoshoots are a brilliant option for subscription boxes, giftbox items and other small products where only the cost of postage (and return postage where necessary) are added onto the session fee and enable me to be able to work with brands from all over!

V & D Interiors https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/10/v-d-interiors As I was booked to shoot staff headshots and some BTS of the V&D interiors offices, we hadn't initially planned for me to take any photos of their on-site training space, but as with any on-location session if time allows and the client is happy to let me explore, getting as much content as possible is always a good idea.

Sometimes the things we see every day, the nitty-gritty of a business don't always feel interesting enough to document, let alone to share. But for the people who don't see these things every day -the people who the images are intended for- getting a peek into how things operate can be really informative and useful, particularly when said space is as fantastically kitted out as this one and in the end, those shots we hadn't planned to get, ended up being some of the first ones used in a write-up all about the Training Academy.

Business promotional sessions are an absolute goldmine for producing photographic content and are always better to plan in sooner rather than later (you never know when you'll be featured by someone for something, and need better photos than ones quickly snapped on your phone). From staff headshots, behind-the-scenes, production detail, location shots and product photography, shoots like these are a fantastic investment and rarely take as long as you'd think.

If you wouldn't mind having me hanging around for a few hours to capture all that makes your business what it is, get in touch via the contact page and let's chat.

So while the ceremony still took place indoors, the wedding breakfast took place outside, under the shade of a huge Sycamore on the grounds of the venue which was perfect. With kiddos in attendance, the Bride sourced a giant inflatable slide and some lawn games to keep them entertained and a band to play and a tractor to take the guests on rides around the nearby country lanes.

Anna & Andy https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/8/anna-andy

Anna & Andy married at The Hundred House Hotel in Norton, Shropshire at the beginning of June. It was my first time back at the venue after staying there on the night of my own wedding 10 years ago and it was a treat to get to see the stunning gardens and barn. With their children being a mix of ages, Anna had the stroke of absolute genius to hire Shropshire Nannies to take care of their youngest and keep their older kiddos entertained and supervised. It was my first time even hearing of such a service, but the team was absolutely wonderful and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

The Jones' https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/7/the-jones Jessie & Nick Low Res (1213)Jessie & Nick Low Res (1213) Jessie & Nick were married in early June at the beautiful High Grosvenor House just outside of Bridgnorth, Shropshire. It was my first time shooting at this venue, but having already visited with the bride in the run-up to the day I already knew what an incredible space it was and would make a perfect location for an intimate summer wedding. With a full day in attendance, I was able to arrive in time to capture the bridal prep until the first dance, and with the weather on our side, and with a couple who were happy to let me whisk them away from their guests throughout the day, we were able to shoot numerous mini portrait shoots against the backdrop of the glorious Shropshire hills. As a business owner herself, Jessie made a point to make sure I photographed as many of the incredibly talented wedding vendors she’d booked, as possible and it was great to finally get to put some faces to the names of businesses I’d only known online. This wedding was a total celebration of the talent we have here in Shropshire, and it was an honour to be among them.

Shropshire Macarons 5 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/7/shropshire-macarons-5 For our latest session for Shropshire Macarons, the main task was to create some 'flying macarons' for a large printed banner to accompany George's new logo design on a banner for his market stall. It's always exciting working with another creative, and being mindful of the graphic designer's needs meant I wanted my photography to be as versatile as possible.

Once the banner shot was complete I set about to create some styled shots, some of which were inspired by our forever-growing mood board and some I came up with myself. Between shoots, I encourage all of my returning clients to send over any ideas and inspiration they may come across, regardless of whether we have any active plans for a shoot. I then send them over to the Pinterest board I keep for that client and then next time we work together I have a personally curated selection of inspo images to work from.

Pink Poppy Veils & Accessories 4 https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/7/pink-poppy-veils-accessories-4 covercover

For our most recent photoshoot with Pink Poppy Veils & Accessories, I finally got a grey paper seamless backdrop to accommodate Yvonne's cathedral-length veils and it made the editing process so much easier. As with our previous shoots, we kept the background the same mid-grey shade, to keep a consistent look on her Etsy storefront and social media and included various close-ups of different elements of the veils, from the edging to embellishments and even some close-ups of the different beading varieties, to give customers as much of a detailed look at all of the many different available options, as possible.

I stayed for half of the day, from the prep until the wedding breakfast, but since I wouldn’t be there for the first dance, and since the space where said dance would take place was set up and ready to go, we decide to go ahead and fake it. And honestly, giving the couple a moment (almost) alone, practicing their dance to whatever song happened to be playing on the bar speakers, was so utterly romantic that I am now making it a part of any wedding I photograph, to have the couple practice their first dance while I photograph it.

Latest shots for Law Customs' custom lightsabers. The brief for this shoot was a darker background to contast the metallic sabers and glowing, LED illuminated blades. I also wanted to amp up the scifi vibes by elevating the sabers in a few shots, which I think turned out really cool.

Lighting https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/5/lighting covercover

My previous spotlight on white backgrounds proved to be really useful, not only for clients when making choices about the sorts of backgrounds they may want to use in their product photoshoots but also for me as a reference when educating clients on the different forms a white backdrop can take, so continuing right on from that I thought writing up a post focusing on lighting would be useful too.

Without light you can't have a photo, but the ways in which we choose to use light and shadow have a huge impact on the overall impression a subject gives and so the more deliberate we can be in the ways we light a subject or object, the more we can use lighting as a tool to make your images stand out and reflect your brand aesthetic.

Single Light Set-Up

lighting bloglighting blog

1. Soft Light

Soft lighting is the one that most closely replicates indoor daylight, creating an even light on the subject with soft shadows.

2. Hard Light

Hard light creates hard shadows which create a dramatic contrast with the background. This lighting most closely replicates direct sunlight and is a really popular lighting style at the moment.

3. Flat Light

Minimal shadows with even lighting across the entire subject, flat lighting can be a bit boring for product photography, but the most flattering for portraits and modeled shots because it softens any lines on the skin.

Creative lighting

lighting creative bloglighting creative blog

4. Rim Ligh

Another dramatic choice, rim lighting is great for separating the subject from the background, creating silhouettes, and adding colour without lighting the entire scene in one hue.

5. Mixed Light

Using a mix of ambient light and artificial light (in this case daylight from a window and a rim flash) is brilliant when adding a little extra to an otherwise 'naturally' lit shot. In the above image, the window light creates a smooth, bright, even lighting while the rim light throws a highlight onto the label and adds extra highlights to the ripples in the water.

6. Backlight

Lighting a subject from behind makes for a glowy, ethereal look which I personally love using when the opportunity arises.

Natural Lighting

lighting natural bloglighting natural blog

Using natural light is an obvious choice for lifestyle images, though when working with a large number of products or where a large number of images are required, ambient light alone is guaranteed to create consistency issues as the clouds move across the sun and the sun moves across the sky. It is very pretty though.

7. Window light

Perfect for food photography, window light is often enough on its own, though factors such as the weather, time of year, and the space being worked within must be kept in mind as all of them will have an impact on how the light will behave in shot.

8. Outdoor light

Typically more reliable than indoor light but again is more suitable for small numbers of images or shots where lighting consistency isn't important.

9. Widow light pt2

A perfect illustration of the unreliability of sunlight in photography. This shot and image 7 were taken using the same light source, but from a slightly different angle and with a different background. But the time I'd changed the set-up, the sun had moved, the clouds had gone and the lighting was dramatically different. Had I been relying on sunlight alone, the 7th should have been near impossible to recreate should I needed to have gone back to it, and with so many clients coming back to add to their ever-growing collections of products months after a previous session and requiring identical photography to keep their shopfront consistent, natural light just wouldn't be an appropriate choice. HOWEVER it can be recreated beautifully. So if you like the look of natural light, that's okay! We just may need to fake it.

Earlier this month I met up with Kay Heseltine, an incredibly talented graphic designer based in Bridgnorth, Shropshire to shoot some personal branding portraits for her business marketing. As is so often the case for small business owners who are used to running the show from behind the scenes, taking the step to put herself in front of the camera was a brave one, so we made sure to pick a location where Kaye felt comfortable and approached the session in the laid back way that lets me get to know the person I'm photographing, helps them to forget about the camera and bring out their most authentic self.

Can't wait for the big day!

Emilie & Will came over to the house have some headshot portraits taken after missing their official school photos last term, and since they absolutely smashed their brother/sister and solo uniform shots in about 10 minutes flat, it left us with plenty of time for a quick outfit change so that Emilie could show off her best pirouette and then pose for some pictures with mommy & daddy too.

Will was 100% sick of my nonsense by this point and opted out of the extra photos, which is completely fair enough, I definitely would have as well XD

Rose Room Gifts https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/3/rose-room-gifts Rose Roome Blog (2)Rose Roome Blog (2)

Last year I began offering micro collaboration sessions as a part of my remote product photography services, where makers could send over a single product in exchange for photos with the aim that even just a handful of high-quality photos would help to boost business on 3rd party selling platforms such as Etsy. It's been really successful so far and while the availability for these sorts of sessions is extremely limited it's something I hope to be able to continue to offer going forwards.

My latest collaboration was with the lovely Rose Room Gifts based up in North Lanarkshire who sent over this amazing pillar candle and let me crack out all my best gothic vibes for the shoot.

If you'd be interested in a remote product session in exchange for a product feel free to get in touch and have your name added to the waiting list.

Friends of Castlefields Photo Competition https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/3/friends-of-castlefields

Friends of Castlefields asked me to judge a photography competition to help raise funds for their brilliant PTA, and with so many fantastic entries I thought it would be great to set up a little virtual exhibition of the fantastic photography work submitted by the Early Years, KS1 & KS2 Pupils.

It turns out that we have some very talented young photographers in our midst with some impossibly adorable pets!

Well done Castlefields, you all did an excellent job!

On White https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/2/on-white blog coverblog cover Before any shoot, it's important to get as much of an idea as possible about what the client hopes to receive as the end result of their session.

I often get asked for products against a white backdrop, which sounds simple enough but can be executed in a variety of different ways to accomplish a variety of different effects. So I thought it may be useful to create examples of different finishes as a reference.

'Plain White'

blog 3blog 3

1. Seamless white

This background is my most used set-up, the one I will default to when given no specific instruction beyond 'on white'. It's a classic shot and looks good with any product, keeping soft shadows from the product and on the background to create the illusion of natural light.

2. Reflected

Sometimes including the reflection of your product can be a simple way of introducing an added dimension to an otherwise plain set-up while still keeping the focus entirely on the 'hero' item. This effect can be accomplished with our without the gradient shadows and is a popular choice for shots of glassware.

3. 100% White / Cutout

Typically used on 3rd party selling platforms such as Amazon or Ebay this set-up eliminates all detail from the backdrop. While there are plenty of apps that can accomplish a cut-out effect, doing it in-camera allows for consistent lighting and produces a higher quality shot which is particularly important when the image will need to be isolated from the background for use in print.

'White Surfaces'

blog 2blog 2

4. Creative White

Using liquids, or substances like sand or glitter can be a great way to add more visual interest to a shot which is incredibly useful when trying to get your brand to stand out on social media.

5. Fabric

I love using fabric backdrops as their varied textures can offer such a breadth of different effects. They're also perfect for creating a natural-looking surface in a studio setting, though when aiming to use any creative surfaces it's important to factor in the size of the product to ensure it will fit within the backdrop.

6. Backdrop Boards

Using boards for backdrops is another brilliant option. Including a 'horizon line' is great for tabletop products and also allows for more lighting options.

'lifestyle white'

blog 1blog 1 7. Draped fabric

Draped fabric backdrops have been incredibly popular lately and I absolutely love using this simple technique to add a touch of realism to a studio image.

8. Environmental

This could be a panel created to look like a real surface or could be an actual space within a room used as a background. Combined with different lighting techniques as in this shot this can be a great way of manufacturing a 'real' environment for your product.

9. Props

Finally, introducing frames, blocks, risers and other kinds of props is a brilliant way to get creative with your products. These can be brought along, ordered specifically for the shoot, made from random items, or customized so make sure to ask what props are available before your shoot.

I hope this has been informative and helps when planning our next session together. It's far from an exhaustive list and I'm planning to make something of a series out of this, talking about different aspects of the photography I produce. So if there's anything you'd like to hear more about in a future post, be sure to let me know!

Jan 2022 Wrap-Up https://www.christina-clare.co.uk/blog/2022/1/jan 11

One of my goals for 2022 was to make more time for creating images just for the fun of it, and this month I hit the ground running to bring to life any and every idea that came to mind. I've been sharing them all to my Instagram and Facebook but I'm aware that not everybody uses social media as much as I do, so thought I'd put together a monthly wrap-up over here too.

C.V.V Art makes beautiful, abstract, alcohol ink art pieces and initially got in touch to commission some photographic reproductions of their paintings to be able to use their digital versions to create products featuring the paintings as designs. This was a first for me, and with the paintings having metallic qualities I knew it was going to take a combination of technical photography and post-production to capture this.

Charlotte only required 3 prints, and so I asked her to bring along some other products to be photographed as mini-sessions allow for more than 3 products and so I was fortunate enough to also get my hands on some of her stunning custom Christmas decorations and trinket dishes.
